First up, I should clarify that most Chinese clone amplifiers are copies of high end designs that manufacturers have let their copyright/patents lapse. So as long as the clone doesn’t carry original branding, they should be legal.

Many of these amps provide an affordable way to get a taste of what high-end gear sounds like. Now I am positive that the genuine product would sound better, but would it sound three to ten times better as that is often how much more genuine amps cost over these clones?

So far I have clones of an FM Acoustics FM711 MKII, a Burmester 933 MKII and a Dartzeel NHB-108. Note, my reference amp is a Hypex Nilai500DIY Stereo that I have converted to dual mono.

The FM711 (SUQIYA-Reproduction FM711 MKII) has been big a disappointment. It was damaged in transit requiring a replacement left channel amplifier board. It works after fitting the new board but has a lot of interference coming through the speakers. I suspect it could be due to poor cable management in the power supply (bundles zip-tied together) that I will attend to in the near future. Sound wise it is tube like with rounded off highs, detailed mids and slightly sloppy bass. There are several manufacturers of these so maybe I just selected a bad one.

The 933 (AMXEKR 1:1 Replica Burmester 933) is a lot better. Zero background noise with an input load. It is a warm sounding amp with nice detailed highs and mids and a fuller bass. I put this down to the 933 having less bass control than the Hypex. Otherwise it is a nice sounding amp and is great for those older recordings with thin bass.

The NHB-108 (D9 Clone Dartzeel NHB-108 Hi-End)  is the standout. It is also silent under input load and produces close to Nilai levels of detail and accuracy. It could be it’s marginally less analytical nature that made it a joy to listen to. The only negative is that it gets quite hot, 40ºc on the cooling fins after 3 hours play. The case has minimal cooling holes so I will be adding some additional cooling vents.

Bought a “D5Pro” Dartzeel with 6 caps per channel and 6 output devices per channel.  Runs hot as a small class A amp.

Decent sounding an great bang for the buck.  Told a friend to buy from the same reseller.  Not as good.  Bass doesnt go as deep.  Runs cooler.  Sadly I cant find a trimpot to tweak bias.

Doubled down an bought an “FM801”.  Terrible sounding, thin and shouty and I guess it might have something to do with only 4 caps per side and an undersized transformer (not quite as advertised so I returned it.

I also repaired a friend’s “T9.2” “Burmester” damaged in shipping.  Casualty of 3 resistors and 8 standoffs.  SOunded great so I took the plunge and bought a “9.3” that had 2 x 800W transformers.  Mine was also damaged in aa similar way during shipping but othing I cant fix.  All I can say is wow.  I do have a stable of rather competent amps and this “Burmester” does NOT disappoint.

My D9 Dartzeel clone also runs hot. The cooling fins were around 40ºc after playing quite loud for a few hours. Genuine Dartzeel NHB-108’s are biased to produce their first 20 watts in class-A so it makes sense these clones run hot.

I was able to reduce the interference by 80% in the FM711 by correctly wiring the power supply by twisting AC cables and separating the + & – supplies. The amp originally had all the power supply cabling in straight runs zip tied together. Now I need to place my ear to the speaker where as before I could clearly hear it from my seating position 4m away. Unfortunately there is no possibility of returning these amps to Aliexpress without having to pay return shipping.

After fixing the wiring and adjusting the quiescent current, my initial listening impressions remain the same. It is OK sounding and probably better suited to bass shy bookshelf speakers as they lacked the bass control my Hypex and D9 amps  have with my Arendal 1723 Tower THX speakers. That said, I am thinking of adding the power supply caps from the broken amplifier board to the FM711 to raise each channels capacitance from 40000uf  to 60000uf to see if that improves its sound quality.

Thnx for giving your opinion on the clone amps!

There are a lot on the chinese market, also diy clones of QUAD, Accuphase, Naim and more. Didn’t test them.

Just ordered a clone Accuphase C-2860 plus. Not really a clone since Accuphase doesn’t have a 2860, but it seems to be a modified version of the C-2850. It’s a class a pre-amp en is to serve a set of Hypex Nilai Mono blocks.
