Amphion Argon3S
Contents
The first speaker we pick up for this giant multi-test is the Amphion Argon3S. You have to start somewhere, right?
Amphion is a brand from Finland led by Anssi Hyvönen. At 25 years old, the brand is relatively young, but has already made quite a name for itself in both the studio world and the traditional hi-fi world. We spoke to Anssi a few times at the High End Munich and his enthusiasm is particularly infectious. Now let’s see what his current designs sound like; it’s been a while since we’ve heard an Amphion.
This Argon3S is a derivative of the studio line. It offers the same construction: 2-way with a passive radiator at the rear. It also has the same, distinctive waveguide. All in all, a design with few frills: we like that.
The sound
That Amphion has one foot in the studio world is quickly apparent. This speaker also feels a bit like a studio monitor. The presentation is somewhat up-front and comes across as crisp and clear. There is loads of detail, but no sharpness. The bass is detail-rich, but not very round or full. Probably to keep the distortion low. If you want more bass: then a subwoofer is an option.
The match with the Hypex Nilai is particularly good. There seems to be more room in the imaging and a little more tightness. This may be due to the slightly drier presentation of the Nilai. With the Pass, it is a bit overdone at times…. but that is also taste.
All in all, a fine speaker with a clear signature. Those looking for a studio presentation in the living room can confidently go for this Amphion.
Measurements Amphion Argon3S
The Amphion measures quite tightly. The response is all within 1.5 dB. What is weird is huge spike from 17 kHz upwards. We can’t explain that, but we see it in other measurements online as well. Perhaps this is due to the decreasing impedance from 17 kHz on?
Distortion is nicely under control with the Argon3S. We see values between 0.5% and 0.3%. Sometimes a bit lower: between 2000 and 6000 Hz for example. That will explain the absence of sharpness. Impedance is very friendly. No dips to be found there. However, except towards the treble. But that is not a problem for a normal amplifier.
