Evovinyl: veggy vinyl

Evovinyl: veggy vinyl

The revival of vinyl is causing environmental headaches: more and more PVC is being added. And that can be changed with Evovinyl.

The record industry generates as much as 30,000 tons of vinyl annually. PVC – or vinyl – is not great for the environment and is also toxic when broken down. And not only is the plastic itself environmentally unfriendly, but the production process also consumes a lot of energy, in part due to the high temperatures required for pressing. Evovinyl from UK-based Evolution Music is different. This alternative is entirely plant-based and should sound the same as traditional vinyl. But it’s naturally degradable and not contributing to more and more plastic in the environment.

Vinyl-less future

Of course: the problem of vinyl is very easy to avoid by simply going digital. However: hardcore vinyl lovers still have no appetite for that. Possibly, then, Evovinyl is a solution. And just as possibly, its use should be made compulsory in time. An additional advantage of the material is that it requires significantly lower temperatures for pressing. And let’s be very honest: manufacturing tens of thousands of tons of PVC to facilitate the listening pleasure of a handful is perhaps also a bit excessive. Especially now that there are alternatives. Meanwhile, larger companies start noticing music in Evovinyl too, with PMC Speakers recently investing in the company.
